It’s been a crazy few weeks! We got back from Chicago and work, which is normally somewhat quiet around the holidays was anything but – more on that later! As a result I’ve been absent but it seems like my efforts to add SEO tags to my old posts is proving worthwhile – many people are stopping by here, which is so exciting! I wanted to share something really cool, the work of Danielle Julian Norton.

Guess what these are made of? I look at a lot of weird and wondrous materials on this blog, these though are made of rice! Rice and monofilament. I’m not sure how the rice is bound, potentially with its own starch, but I love the shapes it makes.

This is an amazing material as well, Neutrogena bars! I like that Danielle creates works that the viewer can move around within. The differences in the tones of the bars is also interesting – they serve to nourish skin and yet, en masse, they look a bit like damages skin cells.

“Breather” another work that people can interact with, see things through…and again, made of rice! I can’t get over the rice as material. I make a considerable about of risotto in our house and I do think that if left to its own devices it could turn into a structural form :)

Though I’m not sure when, Danielle graduated from Notre Dame and is now on the faculty of the Columbus College of Art and Design.

This is a Neutrogena sculpture that Danielle made for the MTV Movie Awards I believe. It looks like a mock up of a Frank Gehry building to me!
